Ask the Expert: Community Response and Its Place in the Crisis Continuum

June’s Ask the Expert session will feature representatives from Madison, WI, and Denver, CO, discussing their community response teams and how those teams fit into the larger public safety landscape. The Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) team in Wisconsin and the Support Team Assisted Response (STAR) in Denver are crisis response teams that do not include law enforcement and connect people in crisis with supportive services. As community response teams become more popular, it is useful to hear from teams that have successfully implemented the model about how they addressed questions regarding safety, dispatching, and data collection with other emergency crisis service providers. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask presenters about these topics and more during the 90-minute event.

Ask the Expert: Collaborative Approaches to Providing Mental Health and Law Enforcement Services

The August Ask the Expert session will be led by representatives from the Salt Lake City Police Department and will focus on their Community Connections Center (CCC), a place where behavioral health providers and law enforcement can work together to address the needs of community members. The community connection team is composed of case workers and social workers who are liaisons between frontline police work and service providers working to support individuals and families who are in crisis. This model brings together multiple agencies to streamline the way services are provided and has yielded positive results. Attendees are invited to learn about Salt Lake City’s work and ask questions about how the CCC was created, its impact on the community, and anything else about this collaborative approach to providing much needed services in the city.

Ask the Expert: Family-Centered Reentry Programming

September’s Ask the Expert session will highlight the FAITHS Throughcare Program in San Bernardino, CA, and their approach to reentry programming. Representatives from FAITHS will discuss the origins of the program, its structure & services, and will answer questions from attendees about their work. FAITHS is a partnership between California State University San Bernardino and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department that offers comprehensive assistance to all justice-involved participants, their families, and the whole of San Bernardino County using an augmented “throughcare” model of rehabilitation. By addressing the needs of the person rejoining the community, the goal of FAITHS is to reduce recidivism, improve the communities in which we all live, save taxpayer dollars by reducing correctional costs, and rupture the intergenerational cycle of trauma and incarceration.

Ask the Expert: Case Management at the Los Angeles Police Department

For this session of the Ask the Expert series, representatives from the Los Angeles Case Assessment Management Program (CAMP) will share their strategies and lessons learned and will answer questions from participants about the program. CAMP was created in 2005 under the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) to help identify, track, and develop individualized long-term intervention strategies to support community members who frequently come into contact with the MEU. The program uses a case management approach that pairs police detectives with psychologists, nurses, and social workers from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to provide needed services to clients.

Ask the Expert: Telehealth During Crisis Response

For the April Ask the Expert session, representatives from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD will discuss the Clinician and Officer Remote Evaluation (CORE) program, how it was started, and what they have learned operating it. Presenters will spend the remainder of the session answering questions from attendees about how the program functions and their agencies’ partnership. CORE is a collaboration between multiple local law enforcement agencies and The Harris Center. CORE connects law enforcement officers in the field with licensed master level crisis clinicians (LPC or LCSW) via a computer tablet. The clinicians conduct a brief crisis assessment of the patient and help the officers determine the best course of action to take.
